Skating 101

(Ages 6-12)

Our entry level class is for children who want to learn to skate for recreational purposes or who want to progress to figure skating or ice hockey.

Important Notes

  • All participants must have an active Learn to Skate USA membership
  • Helmet, Gloves and long sleeves and long pants are recommended
  • Rental Skates are provided at no cost

DIA Skating 201

Completion of Skating 101 Skills Required

DIA’s intermediate level class takes our 101 grads to new heights on the ice.

SnowPlow Program

(4-5 year olds)

It’s a fact that the closer to the ice you are, the less fear you have. For the 4 and 5-year old crowd, our DIA Car Seaters program is the perfect introduction to fun on ice while also promoting physical activity.

Through fun and games our professionally trained staff teaches your precious car seat cargo:

  • The proper way to fall and get back up
  • How to skate forward and backward
  • The secrets to glide and stop
  • And more

A New Skate of Mind

(13 years & Older)

The New Skate of Mind program is DIA’s Learn to Skate program designed specifically for the older beginners in the Daytona area.

New Skate of Mind teaches teens and adults the fundamentals of ice skating in a judgment free atmosphere where all participants are guaranteed to have fun while learning.

The program meets once per week for a total of eight weeks (8 total classes per session).

  • All participants must have an active Learn to Skate USA membership
  • Helmet, Gloves and long sleeves and long pants are recommended
  • Rental Skates are provided at no cost

Learn to Play Hockey – Youth

Daytona Ice Arena has a variety of Learn to Play Hockey programs for players of all ages!

Try Hockey For Free

All Ages

This FREE* class allows kids to "try hockey for free" and learn all of the fantastic life lessons hockey has to offer:

Available for first time enrollment, this 4 week class includes all of the essential hockey equipment needed to get started. After this 4 week class students are encouraged to enroll in Hockey 101 to fully learn the basic skills of ice skating and begin their path to a lifelong sport.

Hockey 101

Ages 6-13

Participants start from square one, learning the basic skills of ice skating, while being introduced to individual ice hockey specific skating skills. Set in a fun and nurturing environment, this introductory program provides all participants a comfort level to enjoy their first experience with hockey, while developing the fundamental skills to succeed in the next program progression steps.

Fundamental Curriculum:

  1. Skate Stride
  2. Proper Stopping Technique
  3. Turning (Edgework)
  4. Backward Skate

  • Hockey Helmet or Bike Helmet

Players build upon the Hockey 101 class as they advance build upon the basic skills of ice skating as well as while being introduced to new ice hockey specific skating skills. Set in a fun and nurturing environment, this next step program provides all participants a comfort level to enjoy their growing experience with hockey, while developing the fundamental skills to succeed in the next program progression steps.

  2. Cross-overs
  3. Pivots
  4. Balance & Recovery

Requirements:

  • Completions of Hockey 101.
  • Hockey Helmet or Bike Helmet

Ages 6-13

This class is for the player who is putting on hockey gear for the first time. Participants will build upon the individual skills learned in Hockey 201 and will begin to learn the game with a stick, puck and net. The focus of the program is to create a fun atmosphere for all players as they continue to enjoy the game of hockey while growing skill development.

Fundamental Curriculum:

  1. Movement with the puck
  2. Passing the puck
  3. Shooting the puck
  4. Puck protection and creating turnovers

Ages 6-13

This class is for the player who has passed hockey 301 and is progressing their hockey development in full gear. Participants will build upon the individual skills learned in Hockey 301 and will continue to learn advanced techniques with a stick, puck and net. The focus of the program is to create a fun atmosphere for all participants as they continue to enjoy the game of hockey while advancing skill development.

Fundamental Curriculum:

  1. Deception
  2. Support
  3. Outnumbering and body contact
  4. Scoring

Recreational League

Ages 6-13

Weekly cross-ice game format for players to experience their first hockey game. This 8 week program gives players game scrimmages weekly with bench coaching and officiating so they can begin to learn the rules of the game. Daytona Recreational league prepares players for statewide travel hockey play.

  1. Movement with the puck
  2. Passing the puck
  3. Shooting the puck
  4. Puck protection and creating turnovers

Requirements:

  • Completion of Hockey 401 or evaluation by Hockey Program Manager
  • All participants must have an active Learn to Skate USA membership
  • Full equipment

Swamp Rabbits Mini Mites Hockey

Dedicated solely for younger children, this program is ideal for those who have an early love for the game of ice hockey.

DME Swamp Rabbits Mini Mites

Ages 4-7

The primary focus of the Mini Mites program is to create an environment where all participants have fun, which is crucial in assuring that their first experience with the game is a positive one. Participants start from square one, learning the basic skills of ice skating, while being introduced to individual ice hockey specific skills (stick-handling, shooting, passing).

Requirements: USA Hockey player registration and full equipment.
